WHAT ARE ALLOTROPES?

ozono.jpg

The importance of oxygen gas is well known, without it there would be no life on our planet.
But the other major allotrope is also very important to life on earth. It is called tri-oxygen or ozone and is much less stable! In the stratosphere, between 10 and 50 kilometer above the surface of the earth, it forms the Ozone Layer. At this altitude it is an important protective layer. It filters out most of the high energy Ultra-Violet radiation from the sun.
The thin ozone layer is being depleted by the release of Chloro-Fluoro-Carbons (CFC´s) which cause ozone to break down. Then it becomes oxygen gas.
When ozone is present at ground level and in the troposphere (10-18 kilometers above the surface) it is a pollutant and greenhouse gas. At ground level ozone is formed by the reaction of sunlight with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide gases from industrial emissions and vehicles. This smog causes asthma and other lung problems.

CARE O2 has arranged oxygen worldwide for international travellers since 1993. If you need supplemental oxygen for traveling abroad or your holiday, then contact us.
