That at least is what NASA researcher Dr. Friedemann Freund claims.
His impressive experiments have added to the conviction that someday earthquakes might become predictable.
His theory goes that the rocks of our planet contain water molecules. They are exposed to heat and pressure beneath the surface and towards the Earth's nuclear core. Under these conditions water breaks down into its molecules which create electrically conductive crystals. The oxygen molecules in these crystals that are found inside all rocks undergo chemical reactions, causing electrical charges that emanate outwards into space. Freund says: "It's very much like the electricity that goes through a battery".
