The luminiscence is repeatedly seen prior to earthquakes as a sky-glow, even reported as "UFO's". In some instances floating balls of light were seen and photographed.
The particles from the solar wind, up to 600 km high, interact with the positive radiation from the oxygen in compressed rocks. The attraction causes a dimple in the ionosphere up to 20 km deep. That can be detected by Global Positioning Satellites (GPS). Evidence of the infra-red glow and strange atmospheric luminiscence prior to massive earthquakes, come from India and China. On May 2, 2008, Dr. Dimitar Ouzounov from the George Mason University found an anomalous infra-red source over Sichuan, China. He informed colleagues to find out what this was. On May 12 a magnitude 8 earthquake hit Sichuan, killing thousands of people. The glow then disappeared.
