THE FUTURE
Since January 1998 the U.S. Lunar Prospector satellite is into orbit around the moon. One of the many tasks of this satellite is scanning the surface of the moon for indications of water. If sufficient quantities of water are detected, it could be used to produce oxygen and hydrogen gases through electrolysis. Solar power will be used to generate the electricity. The oxygen could be used to provide life support for lunar colonies – or moon holidays - and the hydrogen could be used as a fuel.
One of the applications of oxygen as a low-pressure breathing gas is in modern space suits. These suits surround their occupant's body with pressurized air. The devices use nearly pure oxygen at about one third normal pressure, resulting in a normal blood partial pressure of oxygen. This trade-off of higher oxygen concentration for lower pressure is needed to maintain flexible spacesuits. A CARE O2 oxygen vacation to the moon in the future? Well, you never know...!
