It passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, where it is absorbed in
the red blood cells and transported to all the tissues and organs of
our body. Right there oxygen is needed to convert the food we eat into
heat and energy, to keep us alive. Oxygen makes up about one fifth by
volume of air, 90% of water and two thirds of the human body!
It is wrong to think that there is less oxygen in the air at high
altitude. Oxygen makes up about 23% of the air at any level. However,
the air on high mountains for example is around 30% in volume compared
to air at sea level. This means that you need to breathe 3 times as
fast at high level to get the same amount of oxygen into your body as
at sea level. The body just can't process the oxygen in the air that
quickly, that is why mountaineers need an extra oxygen supply.
