We all know that plants produce oxygen, and we humans breathe the stuff, but how many plants are needed to provide enough oxygen for an average human being?
Of course, there?s no such thing as an average human being, so we have to consider some assumptions. For a healthy human, at rest, on a cool day, Mr. Average requires just over 50 litres of oxygen an hour to survive.
So, onto plants. The leaf of an average plant can produce only 5ml of oxygen in an hour. So assuming your plant has 30 leaves, that would be 0.15 liters per hour.
To meet Mr.Average's oxygen needs, he would need 350 plants. That's quite a lot, and clearly quite impractical. And of course, we're talking about Mr. Average. If you are ill, elderly, living in a hotter climate, have limited lung function, etc, then you'll need more oxygen.
