Supplemental Oxygen

oxygen_and_water.jpg

In normal situations oxygen passes readily from the lungs into the bloodstream. It is pumped to all parts of the body by the heart, but when the heart is diseased, it may not be able to pump enough oxygen-carrying blood.  The organs and tissues of the body don't get enough oxygen and will stop functioning properly. This can cause many negative effects, such as difficulty breathing, decreased ability to exercise, fatigue, confusion and even loss of memory. Breathing supplemental oxygen increases the amount of oxygen that passes into the bloodstream and is carried to the organs and tissues.

What is a nasal cannula?
A nasal cannula is a small, adjustable plastic tube, easier to wear than eye glasses. It is placed under the nose. The plastic tube, through which the oxygen will flow, is attached to the oxygen tank.
