As long ago as 1962 \u2026 [NASA researchers] predicted vast lunar processing plants turning out 4,000 pounds of liquid oxygen per month, both for breathing and as an oxidizer for rocket fuel\u2026. Now the Surveyor 5 spacecraft \u2026 reveals it is standing directly over just the kind of rock that would do the job.\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/archive\/earthy-moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Science News<\/i><\/a>, October 14, 1967<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/oxygenworldwide.wordpress.com\/2017\/10\/15\/50-years-ago-a-spacecraft-discovered-oxygen-in-moon-rocks\/moonsky\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2171 noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2171\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oxygenworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/moonsky.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Update<\/h4>\n<p>The moon is not yet dotted with lunar oxygen factories, but scientists are still devising ways to pull oxygen from moon rocks. One technique,\u00a0proposed by NASA scientists in 2010, isolates oxygen by heating lunar rocks to over 1650\u00b0 Celsius and exposing them to methane. Chemical reactions would produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which then react to create water.
