Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;une affection courante qui touche principalement les adultes d&#8217;\u00e2ge moyen ou \u00e2g\u00e9s qui fument, et dont les sympt\u00f4mes comprennent l&#8217;essoufflement et la toux du fumeur. Les personnes atteintes de BPCO pr\u00e9sentent un risque plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 de d\u00e9mence &#8211; une th\u00e9orie actuelle sugg\u00e8re que cela est d\u00fb \u00e0 une diminution des niveaux d&#8217;oxyg\u00e8ne dans le cerveau en raison de probl\u00e8mes d&#8217;approvisionnement en sang des vaisseaux sanguins du cerveau. En accord avec cette th\u00e9orie, certaines \u00e9tudes ont rapport\u00e9 que le fait de donner de l&#8217;oxyg\u00e8ne suppl\u00e9mentaire aux patients atteints de BPCO r\u00e9duisait leur risque de d\u00e9velopper une d\u00e9mence. Cette \u00e9tude n&#8217;indique pas l&#8217;influence de l&#8217;oxyg\u00e9noth\u00e9rapie \u00e0 long terme sur la fonction des vaisseaux sanguins dans le cerveau.
