You have checked your flight times, booked your accommodation and confirmed that you can travel with your portable oxygen concentrator. Then you notice something on the battery label: 92.2 Wh, 150 Wh or perhaps 188.4 Wh.<\/span><\/p>\n

What does that number mean? Can the battery go on the aircraft? And will you need permission from the airline?<\/span><\/p>\n

The simple answer is that most portable oxygen concentrator batteries rated at up to 100 watt-hours can normally be carried in your hand luggage. Batteries between 101 and 160 watt-hours usually require prior airline approval. Batteries over 160 watt-hours are normally prohibited on passenger aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the rules applied by individual airlines can be stricter. Before travelling, you should check both your portable oxygen concentrator and every battery you intend to carry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The good news is that this is manageable. You simply need to make the checks early enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

What does Wh mean on a POC battery?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Wh stands for watt-hours. It tells you how much energy a battery can store.<\/span><\/p>\n

You should find the Wh rating printed on the battery label. Check the battery itself rather than relying only on the portable oxygen concentrator\u2019s manual or model name. The same POC may be available with batteries of different capacities.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the watt-hour rating is not shown, it may be possible to calculate it by multiplying the battery voltage by its capacity in amp-hours:<\/span><\/p>\n

Volts \u00d7 amp-hours = watt-hours<\/b><\/p>\n

For example, a 12 V battery rated at 8 Ah has a capacity of 96 Wh.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are uncertain, contact the POC manufacturer or your oxygen equipment provider. Do not arrive at the airport hoping that the airline will work it out at check-in.<\/span><\/p>\n

The three POC battery categories<\/b><\/h2>\n

The current aviation guidance divides rechargeable lithium-ion batteries into three main categories.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

These limits apply to individual batteries, not the total capacity of all the batteries you are carrying.<\/span><\/p>\n

These are general aviation rules. Your airline always has the final say about what it will accept on a particular flight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why larger POC batteries can be a problem<\/b><\/h2>\n

A larger or double battery can make a portable oxygen concentrator more convenient. It provides a longer operating time and means you do not have to change batteries as frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, a battery that is ideal for daily use may be too large for air travel.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, some Inogen portable oxygen concentrators can be used with either a single or double battery. A single battery rated at 92.2 Wh falls below the usual 100 Wh threshold. A double battery rated at 188.4 Wh exceeds 160 Wh and would normally be prohibited on a passenger aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

This does not necessarily mean you cannot travel with your POC. It may mean replacing one large battery with several smaller batteries that each fall below 100 Wh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Check that any replacement batteries are compatible with your machine, genuine and in good condition. You should also confirm the complete battery arrangement with the airline before buying additional batteries or finalising your travel plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

How many spare POC batteries can you take?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Under the 2026 IATA guidance, a passenger may generally carry up to 20 spare lithium-ion batteries rated at no more than 100 Wh, provided they are for personal use.<\/span><\/p>\n

That does not mean every airline will automatically allow 20 batteries. Airlines can apply stricter limits, particularly when someone is carrying a substantial number of batteries or travelling on a smaller aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

For batteries between 101 and 160 Wh, the limit is generally two spare batteries per person, and prior approval from the airline is required.<\/span><\/p>\n
